Goodsoup: Curse of Monkey Island for the Amiga

Published 03.07.2022 - 17:57 by osz

After The Secret of Monkey Island (1990) and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (1991), the Monkey Island games were over. At least on the Amiga and the successor, The Curse of Monkey Island (1997), was a few years away and was only released for the PC. Other parts of the successful adventure followed in the 2000s. In the meantime, just as an aside, Return to Monkey Island, another title in the game series, is supposed to ensure lively pirate adventures this year. But how about the third part of Monkey Island on the Amiga? It does not work? Maybe soon, also natively and without ScummVM in the luggage.

The Brit Robin Southern is currently developing a port of The Curse of Monkey Island for the Amiga with Goodsoup. However, one shouldn't expect too much from the current developer version at the moment, but it can certainly be seen as a proof of concept. Goodsoup version 0.4, released four days ago, does not yet support screen graphics or audio, but it can load the game data (scripts and room files) and the game up to the level of difficulty selection.

The game requires the original game files from The Curse of Monkey Island, which can be purchased for a few euros from GOG.com, for example: https://www.gog.com/game/the_curse_of_monkey_island

Appropriate hardware is also required. Under AmigaOS 3.1 at least 2 MB RAM and a 68020 CPU should be installed. The hard drive should have around 940 MB free space for the entire software package. In addition, you need P96-compatible graphics hardware and software in the system that offers at least a resolution of 640x480 pixels and 25 frames per second and is able to meet the requirements. Finally, installed AHI software with compatible hardware is required.

As already mentioned, the project is still in an early stage, so we have to wait and see for now. However, we are confident that the project will be successfully implemented in the future and we are already looking forward to it. Until then, we recommend the project page to all those who are curious and keep an eye on it in order not to miss any important updates: https://github.com/betajaen/goodsoup
