AWeb Homepage again online

Published 16.09.2007 - 11:53 by AndreasM

A word from the sunsite/dotsrc system administrators:

A few days ago our main hosting server experienced a triple disk failure in its main RAID array. Even the two hot spares in there couldn't really help with this, since the disks were failing faster than the array could rebuild itself.

So -- the thing went down hard and we had to restore most of the data from the daily tape backups. Which took longer than expected, since a power failure in the server room during that restore (a) forced us to start all over again and (b) made the server room staff all of a sudden *very* busy with other things.

Long story short: Everything seems to be working fine again, but we lost almost one day's worth of data in the CVS repositories, mysql databases and project homedirs (websites and downloads). Also a few mails might have been rejected during the downtime.

So if you uploaded / committed / stored something recently, please check if the data on our server is up-to-date. In case of problems please report to staff at dotsrc.org, and we will fix them asap.

We are terribly sorry about this mess. During the last ~10 years of SunSITE.dk/dotsrc.org this is by far the worst breakdown. The restore took way longer than expected, unfortunately we can't really do otherwise with our current hardware. (Hint: a couple of new servers would be much appreciated - mail to staff at dotsrc.org if you got a spare server)

A great thank you goes to the great people at KOM CWS for their massive help with the restore.
