Deniser: Denise replacement based on FPGA

Published 20.08.2021 - 09:22 by osz

Deniser: Denise replacement based on FPGA

Martin Åberg from Sweden is currently developing a replacement for the Denise DIP chip. The project, named Deniser, is based on FPGA. Denise is one of the custom chips in the Amiga. The chip is responsible for numerous graphic-related tasks and works together with the custom chips Agnus and Paula.

The current status of the project is as follows: It is known that the replacement chip with OCS features works in the Amiga 500 in Extra Half Brite mode. It is also known that the PAL mode with an ECS Agnus is supported so far, but not the NTSC mode. Some sprites are also displayed outside the visible area of the screen (above or below it). What could theoretically work, but has apparently not yet been tested, is the use in the Amiga 1000, 2000 or 3000, as well as the cooperation with an OCS-Agnus. This also applies to the HAM mode, collision detection and use together with genlocks. [...]
