DIY project: Amiga Stereo Digitizer

Published 16.10.2022 - 15:54 by osz

A few days ago we reported on a DIY project by wiretap-retro on GitHub, where you can solder an "AP420 Renewed Amiga Audio Digitizer" yourself: app.php/newsportal/?start =0&ulg=de&news_id=40260

A very similar project by the same author is the DIY project "Amiga Stereo Digitizer" recently published on GitHub. The project by the author Sampedenawa, presented in the Italian Computer Gazette 4/95, was brought up to date by wiretap-retro with his consent and now consists of SMD components. The article just mentioned is available as a PDF in the project's GitHub repository.

The digitizer has an RCA input (chinch) in stereo and allows amplification adjustment for the left and right channel separately via two potentiometers. It is connected to the Amiga's parallel port, but can also be switched over for use under PC-DOS using a jumper. [...]

Paragon Redux: Amiga game for Android and browser

Published 16.10.2022 - 15:31 by osz

Paragon by Testaware is probably unknown to many, especially since no Hall of Light entry can be found for this game. The free game was written in Amiga BASIC sometime between 1989 and 1990 and can still be downloaded for the Amiga today: https://testaware.wordpress.com/amiga/

At first glance, the game is reminiscent of the board game "Reversi". A board with many tiles and each player takes turns placing a round stone on the board, either red or blue. But unlike Reversi, the aim here is to place a pattern on the board that is predetermined for the respective player. If you succeed, you get a point and these stones are frozen. The game is over when no more of the given patterns can be placed. The winner is the player with the most points. In itself a very simple game principle, but as so often the details make it a bit trickier. Of course, from time to time you can and must make it a strategy to obstruct the player's plans. And after a specified number of moves, all stones that have been placed on the board but not frozen are inverted. This is how red becomes blue and vice versa. The game is played alternately between two players or between a player and the computer or artificial intelligence as it is called today.

A port of this game called Paragon Redux is available for free from the Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ragonredux [...]

New logic game: Connect

Published 12.10.2022 - 09:00 by osz

Frank Röger from Neuss (Germany) wrote a logic game for the Amiga that is as simple as it is ingenious. Frank was inspired by Japanese Hashiwokakero logic puzzles: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashiwokakero But what is the game about?

Chips are placed on a circuit board, between which connections must be made. Sounds super simple, but of course the game has its rules. The number of starting and incoming connections must exactly match the number specified on the chip. In addition, connections must not cross and there must be a coherent network of connections between all chips per board - all chips on a board must form one large network.

Connect offers a high score list that can be saved and has three modes: a solo, a coop and a battle mode. In addition, the board size is variable and up to 4,294,967,296 game variations are possible. [...]

Digital magazine: WhatIFF 1.07, published October 2022

Published 12.10.2022 - 08:25 by osz

The English language digital Amiga magazine WhatIFF has been released in version 1.07 (October 2022). WhatIFF can be read directly on the Amiga and the current issue includes reviews of the Elbox Fast ATA 4000 MK-VII controller, the Classic Amiga Programming Book, Clouds AGA, AmiTree 2022 and the AmiKit A1200 8 MB RAM extension.

Furthermore, the current issue deals with morphing with Brilliance 101, how to open/read Amiga Guide files on other computers or how to get Amiga OS 3.2 running under AmigaOS 4.1 using E-UAE. An Amiga 1200 crash course should bring you closer to your Amiga and a so-called roundup deals with modern Amiga magazines. These and other topics are rounded off by two interviews. Eric Hill from AmigaLove.com and Hernain, the Amiga Art Contest Winner 2021 answered questions for the WhatIFF magazine.

Do-it-yourself project: AP420 Renewed Amiga Audio Digitizer

Published 11.10.2022 - 21:37 by osz

In its depths, the Big Book of Amiga Hardware also lists a sampler from Phoenix Micro Technologies, the AP420 Mono Audio Digitizer: https://bigbookofamigahardware.com/bboa ... px?id=1991

wiretap-retro, a GitHub user that you may have noticed here lately, has now created a remake of this sampler. Among other things, the revised extension uses SMD elements and, in addition to a second RCA connection, which combines stereo signals into a mono signal, also offers a TRS (Tip, Ring, and Sleeve) microphone connection for a suitable jack plug. A switch on the circuit board can be used to switch between RCA and TRS inputs. There is also a gain control for adjusting the audio signal strength.

The small extension can be connected to the parallel port of any Amiga and does not require an external power supply. It should be noted, however, that an adapter for the different parallel port assignment is absolutely necessary for the Amiga 1000! Wiretap-retro also provides a suitable solution here in its GitHub projects: https://github.com/wiretap-retro/Amiga- ... -Converter [...]
