Vielleicht ist das Laufwerk verschmutzt/verstellt, oder das Netzteil hat doch einen weg und funktioniert so eben gerade noch, und das externe zieht dann zuviel Strom, so daß das Netzteil dann zusammenbricht. Testen könnte man das am besten mit einem weiteren Netzteil bzw. externen Diskettenlaufwerk....
