DigiBooster 2.x performance

Post by krashan »

As the player engine of DigiBooster Pro 3 takes shape, I want to compare its performance with 2.x version. Then I ask you to tell how many tracks can you use (without playback problems) on your hardware configurations (I have no classic Amiga, so can't check it myself). I'm interested in:

68k CPU type and clocking
PPC (if present) type and clocking
AHI being 68k or PPC version
Audio hardware
And number of tracks that you can use simultaneously for realtime playback without any sound jitters and hickups.

Do we need a demo song? DSP on/off? AHI audio mode? 8/16bit? Track scopes on/off? And we need DBP 3 to compare. :)

Well I do not want some exact figures, just an estimate (like "16-channel mods are OK, some 20-channel ones have trouble"). DBPro 3 has no DSP Echo yet, so off. AHI mode - 16 bit. Track scopes off.

As I said before, I have no classic Amiga. I tried 68k version on MorphOS with JIT dynamic compiler switched off. For Pegasos 2 without JIT, SysSpeed test result is comparable to hypothetic 68040 @ 66 MHz (or hypothetic 68060 @ 33 MHz). Then DBPro 3 plays 20-channel mods smoothly, for 24-channel ones CPU emulation is sometimes too slow.

A1200, AGA, 68040/40 (32MB), OS3.1, Kick3.1 (remapped to Fast-Ram)

Digibooster 2.23
ScreenMode: DBLPAL (720x550)
AHI version: 4.180 (the fastest one)
AudioMode: Paula:14 bit stereo++ at 44,1kHz
16 Bit (Playmode)

Max. channels without clipping: 18

I used one sample at same position on all channels for the test.
