DKB MultiStart I

Post by papa_november »

This VERY early Kickstart switcher is listed as the A500 version of the KwikStart II. It's actually quite different and might be better off listed as a seperate device. It came with a ROM version of KickStart 1.1, split across four 27C512-equivalent PROMs:

U4 = EVEN LO

U5 = EVEN HI

U6 = ODD LO

U7 = ODD HI

The other socket appears to be for a standard 40-pin 16-bit ROM. Like nearly all other switchers, there's a clip that's supposed to be attached to somethinng but I have no clue where the clip goes or how the ROMs are switched.

The connector going into the motherboard's ROM socket is missing pin 10, which is listed as "chip enable". I have no idea whether this is intentional or not. I haven't tested the specimen I have yet, so I'm not sure if 512K kickstarts even work in the thing (or if it even works at all).

Tried it. It comes up switched to the U4-U7 ROMs by default instead of the 40-pin ROM. Attaching the clip to GARY pin 41 results in gray or scrambled yellow screens.

I eventually got it to work. I was using it on an A500 that needed the ROM socket pin 1-31 swap and I hadn't done it yet. After I did that, it started behaving perfectly. 512K kickstarts work just fine.

The clip actually does need to be plugged into GARY pin 41; once that is done the default ROM is the one in the 40-pin socket. There's solder holes for a jumper that can be used to change that, though. ROM switching is accomplished by holding down reset (CTRL-LAMIGA-RAMIGA) for 3-6 seconds.

Hi papa_november,

thank you very much for the information.
The MultiStartI is not listed in the database at the moment.
Du you have any images of it to complete a new database entry with it?

Edit: A new database entry is listed.
It seemes there's a need for more information or a better english translation.

Is there anobody who could write a good english text for this entry?

Here you go:

This appears to be one of the first Kickstart switchers designed for the A500/2000. It comes with a ROM version of Kickstart 1.1, split across four 27C512-equivalent PROMs:

U4 = EVEN LO
U5 = EVEN HI
U6 = ODD LO
U7 = ODD HI

The remaining socket is for a standard 40-pin 16-bit ROM. The clip attaches to pin 41 of the "GARY" chip. ROMs are switched by holding down reset(CTRL+LAMIGA+RAMIGA) for 3-6 seconds.
